From the sea to the Saimaa lake region

From the Gulf of Finland you can arrive to Saimaa via Saimaa Canal or by road transport. The Saimaa Canal is an important waterway connecting the Saimaa lake system with the sea. The drop from Lake Saimaa to the sea level totals 75,6 m a difference, which is levelled by eight locks in the canal. The lenght of the canal is 42,9 km, divided by the border: on the Finnish side 23,3 km with 3 locks, and on the Russian side 19,6 km with 5 locks. The traffic on the canal consist mainly of freight vessels carrying timber and products of the wood-processing industries. Passenger traffic is steadily increasing. The canal itself has become a tourist attraction.
